In 1997 Damien Hirst launched a collaborative restaurant venture in Notting Hill called Pharmacy. Hirst designed the interior of the restaurant, complete with aspirin tablet-styled bar stools, medicine cabinets and pharmacy-themed wallpaper. Waiting staff even wore surgical gowns.
Despite winning a number of industry awards including the prize for best-designed restaurant from the Carlton London Restaurant Award, the venture also courted controversy with the then Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) who took legal action over allegations of the naming of the restaurant being against section 78 of the Medicines Act 1968. They believed the name to be misleading to the public, since the restaurant was clearly not a registered pharmacy nor were Hirst or any of his team pharmacists.
Following these legal threats, the restaurant name was changed to 'Army Chap' (an anagram for Pharmacy) before settling on Pharmacy Restaurant and Bar. The case was subsequently dropped.
The restaurant closed in 2003 due to financial and management issues.
